Cyclists have expressed concern about the potential hazards the current roadworks may bring to people on bicycles, particularly, the addition of concrete block retaining walls.

These barriers lower the effective width of the shared foot path for cycling phase, while posing a crush hazard of long vehicles and HGVs for cyclists caught on the inside of such vehicles a serious threat, the Bicycle Advocacy Group said in a statement.

The group suggesting that riders on the road take the lane to avoid this and asked the drivers of such vehicles to be patient and temporarily avoid overtaking people on bicycles riding next to the concrete barriers.

On the other hand, the local cycling community said it was pleased to see the cycling infrastructure being upgraded at the airport roundabout. The BAG group had raised concerns about the inadequacy of the walking speed shared footpath cycling infrastructure along Aviation Avenue, during their Cycling Level of Service audit earlier this year.

"Clearly things are changing for the better," the group said.
