Five young maths wizards have won medals at an international mathematics competition in Bulgaria.

The budding mathematicians, aged 10 to 12, took home a mix of gold, silver and bronze medals from the Mathematics Without Borders competition final in which students from 13 different countries took part.

Education officer Melanie Casha said more than 16,000 students participate in the competition every year and the education authorities wanted to see more Maltese taking part in similar activities for different subjects.

The Maltese medallists were Mark Azzopardi, Matteo Stango, Eric Bader, Nicolai Bonello, and Daniel Pisani. The students go to a mix of state, church and independent schools across the island.

Asked by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo how he felt about maths, Daniel said "I like it because it is logical", adding that he thought other students need not be put off from the subject as long as they looked at problems logically.
