"Extensive" roadworks in Rabat's Roman Villa area will begin today and are expected to be completed by the second week of August, Transport Malta has announced.

The roadworks, which will begin at the corner with the town's HSBC branch and continue until Rabat cemetery, will also include the square in front of the Roman Villa.

The area was identified by Transport Minister Ian Borg as one of the first key roads to be upgraded as part of the government's seven-year pledge to fix all Malta's roads. Dr Borg had also listed Bontadini Street in Birkirkara and Birkirkara Street, Attard among the first batch of roadwork projects.

Cars will continue to be allowed through the Roman Villa area throughout the works, bar for periods of time when the road will be closed to traffic.

Transport Malta urged drivers to seek alternative routes and follow instructions by on-site officials.
