Opposition leader Simon Busuttil today vowed to keep on fighting for justice despite police inaction over the Panama Papers scandal.

Speaking during a phone interview on Radio 101, Dr Busuttil referred to an “explosive” interview in The Sunday Times of Malta, in which former police inspector and FIAU investigator Jonathan Ferris revealed that the police had not even bothered to register damning reports which raised suspicions of money-laundering by top government officials.

Dr Busuttil said the lack of action by the police, Attorney General and Prime Minister against Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri was “obscene”.

He questioned how the two men were going to fund €1 million in annual deposits into their Panama companies on their government salaries.

Leaked extracts from another FIAU report show money was transferred to a Dubai company called 17 Black, which the agency said was listed as one of the companies that would be paying money into Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri’s Panama companies.

The FIAU found that the money transferred to 17 Black came from the local company behind the 25-year-old LNG tanker fuelling the new gas-fired power station.

Asked why the Opposition had filed a court application asking for criminal investigations into Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri’s actions, Dr Busuttil said that if the PN did not fight for justice, then it went out the window.

Dr Busuttil said the PN had asked the magistrate to investigate whether what the two men had done was a textbook case of money-laundering, which was the description used by MEPs from the Pana Committee during a visit to Malta.

“Not only were the FIAU reports not investigated, they were not even registered. It is obscene. There has to be someone who stands up to these people”, Dr Busuttil said.

Dr Busuttil vowed to keep up his fight for justice as a private citizen, once he stepped down from the role as Opposition leader.

He said justice was being applied selectively in Malta, with action taken against the common citizen while those in Castille remaining untouched.

On the PN’s leadership race, Dr Busuttil again made it clear that he had no interest in re-contesting.

Dr Busuttil said his own standards required him to respect the election result and bear responsibility for it.

“These are the standards I believe in”, Dr Busuttil said.
