Three cheers for Nationalist MP Edwin Vassallo for having the guts to vote according to his conscience on the second reading of the Marriage Equality Bill.

Besides the worrisome fact that, as he argued, the Bill will probably pave the way for other laws that will tamper with pro-life legislation, I am sure that many Maltese strongly object to the idea of bestowing the time-honoured term ‘marriage’ to same-sex unions.

This is, in the view of many, a travesty of both divine and natural law, as the word ‘marriage’ can only logically be applicable to a union between one man and one woman.

The argument that this legislation was proposed and approved by both political parties does not hold water for, together with this proposal, there were hundreds of other policies, and the voter could not just vote for or against this one issue. We have to keep in mind that we were being told all the time that there was so much at stake in this election.

One final thought: Will Catholic MPs emulate MP Edwin Vassallo and stand up to be counted if at some future time, as many fear, some anti-life measures start slowly being propelled in Parliament?
