The Victoria International Arts Festival came to a close last Monday with a concert by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at St George’s Basilic. The orchestra, under the direction of VIAF artistic director Joseph Vella, performed Vella’s Sounds of Celebration Op. 129, Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major Op. 68 (Pastoral).

For Haydn’s Concerto, the organisers brought over the principal trumpeter of the Bastille Opera (Paris), Nicolas Chatenet.

The concert brought to a close a successful run of 36 musical and cultural events that saw over 600 musicians descend on Gozo in the past five weeks. Concerts were held in major venues all over Victoria and record audiences filled the halls and churches every evening, the organisers said.
