I am happy to note that the government intends to improve the road infrastructure.

Dragonara Road, where it runs beside St George’s Bay, in Paceville, regularly experiences heavy, costly and frustrating traffic jams. Yet, it offers the possibility of one of the quickest and cheapest ways of alleviating the problem.

This stretch of Dragonara Road used to be two-way but a nice wide pedestrian promenade was introduced for what seemed like a good reason until this, now one-way, road started clogging up traffic badly.

It could be made two way again by having a new promenade, raised above the road level, possibly even as wide as the road, and then replacing the existing pavement with a road.

Alternatively, if the land is available or can be appropriated, a new promenade, at the current width, could be part cantilevered out towards St George’s Bay. Enough area seems to be available at both ends of the existing one-way stretch to allow for suitable stairs and lift systems. The bus stop, which also prevents a smooth traffic flow because of its unfortunate positioning, could be slightly relocated to ease this problem.

Most, if not all, of the construction work involved can be carried out without interfering with the current traffic flow.

An elevated promenade would enhance the safety of pedestrians, who would also enjoy a better view. Most importantly, emergency vehicles will again be able to access St George’s Park, which is often isolated by gridlock, from both ends and can get out of Paceville through more than one route.
