An Englishman and Italian woman were hospitalised overnight after they both suffered falls in two separate incidents, police said this morning.

The 35-year-old Englishman fell down a set of stairs at a hotel in Triq il-Marfa, Mellieħa at around 10pm. District police and paramedics were called to the scene and the man was taken to Mater Dei hospital, where doctors certified him as being grievously injured.

In a second incident, Gozo police were called to Triq Girgor Buttigieg in Nadur at around 12.30am, after a 36-year-old Italian woman fell from a height of around eight courses at a private residence.

She was seriously injured and rushed to Gozo General Hospital for treatment.

Magistrate Joanna Vella Cuschieri has launched an inquiry into the incident and appointed various court experts to help with the investigation.
