Alternattiva Demokratika this evening welcomed yesterday’s Parliamentary vote introducing gay marriage.

In a statement,  AD deputy chairman Carmel Cacopardo said: "Our country has shown maturity on approving in Parliament, in a nearly unanimous vote, the marriage equality law.

"Parliament is accepting a pluralism of values and decided to respect everyone equally. It is now time for a unifying discourse because as a country we need to show respect to each and every member of society.”

Everyone deserved the utmost respect in society and it was a real shame that some deemed different values to theirs to be 'immoral'.

Although it was possible for one to disagree, to insult people because they had different values was not on.

“A society with a plurality of values is a fact and nobody will or can change that."

AD hoped, Mr Cacopardo said, that a new chapter would be opened in Malta where mutual respect was the order of the day.
