London-based contemporary pianist, composer and bandleader Bruno Heinen is today giving a solo recital as part of the Malta International Arts Festival.

Heinen is no new name to the music scene, having performed at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the Southbank Centre, the Royal Albert Hall, the Vortex Jazz Club in London and the Shanghai World Music Festival, among other places. He has worked with artists such as Reem Kelani, Julian Siegel, Stan Sultzman, Jean Toussaint, Julian Arguelles, Pete Saberton, Byron Wallen, Ben Kraef, Antonio Fusco and Heidi Vogel.

Tonight he will be reimagining works by Antonio Vivaldi, Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Kurtag – improvising on themes of their compositions.

In the case of the Stockhausen, he will be playing freely alongside one of the original sets of Stockhausen’s own Tierkreis music boxes – given to Heinen’s parents by Stockhausen himself.

He will also be playing his arrangement of the seminal jazz ballad The Peacocks by Jimmy Rowles, besides a variety of his own compositions, including Mr Vertigo – the title track of his forthcoming solo album inspired by the book of the same name by Paul Auster.

Bruno Heinen: Re-imaginings will be held tonight at the Robert Samut Hall in Floriana at 9pm. Entrance is free. For more information, visit www.maltartsfestival.org.
