Spazju Kreattiv is presenting an encore of the Metropolitan Opera’s adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s powerful musical interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

First produced in 1847, Macbeth was Verdi’s 10th opera and the first Shakespearean work that the famous composer adapted for the operatic stage. This opera about a married couple driven by a mutual desire – power – emerged out of Verdi’s “gallery years”, an incredibly productive time wherein the composer produced 22 works in 16 years.

The opera was deemed unusual by the Italian opera standards of its day but was nonetheless well received and Verdi himself once wrote that he prized it above all his other works.

With the original play’s signature themes of fate and risk, omen and guilt, Macbeth marked an important milestone in the composer’s oeuvre, one that showed a departure from more conventional opera to the rounded dramas of his mature years.

Macbeth is showing  this evening at the St James Cavalier cinema at 7pm. The opera will be in Italian with English subtitles. For tickets, log on to www.kreattivita.org or call 2122 3200.
