Waiting time for cataract surgery at Mater Dei has been reduced from two years during the PN government to just four months now, according to Health Minister Chris Fearne.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Silvio Grixti (PL), he said that the reduction in waiting lists had also had an impact on the number of patients on them, with 3,580 in 2013 down to 1,018 in June 2017.

He was also asked about the waiting times for hip and knee replacements and confirmed that this was down to around one year, considerably less than it has been in recent years.

There were 1,733 patients awaiting new knees in March 2013, which had been virtually halved to 878 by May 2017.

The 334 people awaiting hip replacements in December 2012 had been reduced to 196 by the end of May 2017.
