A total of 1,239 beds are being added as a result of works at six hotels at the moment, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi has told parliament.

This includes refurbishment, extensions and new hotels.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Etienne Grech (PL), he said that the additional rooms would not change the classification of the hotel, but that they would improve the overall offering.

There are 39,677 beds available in 173 hotels and guesthouses as at April 2017, according to the National Statistics Office. Just over 1,800 beds were added between April 2016 and April 2017.

Hotels are allowed to add two extra storeys by the Planning Authority in 2014, an offer taken up by seven hotels in all.
