Herbert Messina Ferrante’s article ‘The killing of marriage’ (July 7) is a masterpiece of concise analysis which will be certain to annoy all the right people.

When the Church (in Malta as elsewhere) showed no inclination to change the historic understanding of marriage, the State (in Malta as elsewhere) decided to do so instead. That decision, enabled in Malta by a popular vote possibly spurred on by disenchantment with the Church after recent scandals, will certainly (in Malta as elsewhere) lead on to further departure from traditional morality, not least the introduction of state-sponsored abortion.

St John Paul II memorably described it as “the culture of death” and in Malta as elsewhere it will have momentous consequences for the whole of society.
