After having to postpone activities due to the election, all Paola parishioners and those who have links with Paola, are tomorrow celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Christ the King parish church in their home town.

Parish priest Canon Marc Andre Camilleri said there will be other liturgical and cultural activities during the year “to mark this important milestone in the history of the parish”.

Archbishop Michael Gonzi inaugurated the parish church to Paola on June 3, 1967.

The celebrations have been linked to the corporal works of mercy which are found in the Gospel according to St Matthew and the event is linked to the exhortation “I was in prison and you came to visit me”.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna will tomorrow celebrate a Pontifical High Mass with the clergy. This will be followed by a procession with the titular statue of Christ the King accompanied by the two bands of the locality. The procession will make its way to the Corradino Correctional Facility where, with the participation of the residents of the facility, Mgr Scicluna will lead a session of prayer based on the corporal work of mercy linked to this event, organised by the parish youth.

The procession will then proceed to the church of St Ubaldesca, which was built in the 16th century and which served as the first parish church in Paola until the building of the new church was completed.

Prayers and hymns of praise will be said during this occasion when, for the first time in history, the titular statue of Christ the King will enter the church of St Ubaldesca.

The celebration will be brought to an end at the parish church on the arrival of the procession. Following the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, the new choir loft of the church will be inaugurated.

The 50th anniversary celebrations will be held tomorrow. For more information, send an e-mail to 50senakkonsagrata@gmail.com or call 9943 9001.
