The third night of the Triq Cinemoon Festival on Thursday focuses on the theme of Time Out.

This unusual festival, in its fifth year, asks its prospective audience to pick the films that are screened, with the general theme this summer being ‘In Time’.

The films proposed for this week include Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a 2016 New Zealand adventure comedy film written and directed by Taika Waititi, whose screenplay was based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. It stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison as ‘Uncle’ Hector and Ricky Baker, a father figure and son who become the targets of a manhunt after fleeing into the New Zealand bush.

El ciudadano ilustre (The Distinguished Citizen), a 2016 Argentine-Spanish drama film directed by Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival. At Venice Oscar Martínez won the Volpi Cup for best actor.

The film was also selected as the Argentine entry for the best foreign language film at the 89th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.

El ciudadano ilustre tells the story of a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, who has been living in Europe for decades. He accepts an invitation from his hometown in Argentina to receive a prize. In his country, the protagonist finds both similarities and irreconcilable differences with the people of his hometown.

The other film one can vote for is Captain Fantastic, a 2016 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Matt Ross and starring Viggo Mortensen.

The story centres on a family that is forced by circumstances to reintegrate into society after living in isolation for a decade.

The film obtaining the most votes will be shown on Thursday in the evocative surroundings of Valletta’s enchanting night-time streets. Those who attend can choose their seat on the stepped section of St John’s Street, Valletta, just outside Cafe Society.

Voting closes on Thursday morning with the winning film announced around midday.

Film ratings change depending on the title chosen.

Screenings start at 8.30pm and entrance is free.
