Malta's searing summer is about to get even hotter, with maximum temperatures expected to rise further during the next few days.

The mercury is expected to reach highs of 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and remain high until Saturday, when a dip to 31 degrees will bring locals some respite from the scorching heat.

Temperatures reached highs of 36 degrees today - three degrees higher than July's average maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius.

Nights are also expected to be warmer than usual for July, with temperatures never dipping below 23 degrees this week. Malta's average minimum temperature in July is usually 21.7 degrees.

In a statement warning people about the dangers of hot weather, the Health Division urged people to stay hydrated, avoiding sun exposure during the hottest periods of the day and remaining cool by sticking to the coolest parts of their home or office.

High temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heatstroke or dehydration. While anyone can be negatively affected, senior citizens, babies, young children and people with chronic conditions are especially susceptible to negative effects.
