Restoration works on a painting by renowned artist EmvinCremona, which was vandalised at the airport, are to start this week.

The perpetrator has scribbled what looks like a signature in the bottom right corner of the painting, which depicts Our Lady of Aviation.

A spokeswoman for the Malta International Airport said an expert restorer had already been commissioned to bring the work back to its original state and works will start this week.

Asked whether the perpetrator had been identified, she said the investigations were ongoing.

“The company has kept the painting on display so that the  public could enjoy this work of art and condemns the vandals for this disservice,” the spokeswoman added.

Cremona is one of Malta’s most enigmatic modern artists, known also for his church paintings. His work can be found at the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, the World Health Organisation headquarters in Geneva and the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Born in Valletta, the leading 20th-century artist was also a stamp designer.
