The feast of St George will be celebrated in Victoria next Sunday. The week-long celebrations, orgainsed by the La Stella Philharmonic Society, include horse races, demonstrations with different statues of St George, a grand march on the eve of the feast, the traditional morning march and the procession on Sunday evening.

Besides the La Stella Band, 10 bands will take part during the festivities. A record number of six Maltese bands will perform during the feast. These are the King’s Own Band and La Vallette Band, San Ġorġ and Anci bands of Qormi, St Catherine Band of Żurrieq and St Helen Band of Birkirkara.

The La Stella Band will perform the hymn Su Garzoni, composed by Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia in 1894, at St George’s square on Friday at 9pm. The band, under the direction of Mro Joseph Vella, will be joined by the Astra Theatre’s Piccole Stelle Choir, led by Sylvan Cini. The hymn, A San Giorgio Martire (1931), will be performed twice by the La Stella Band on Saturday and Sunday.

Spectacular fireworks will held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, while a special synchronised display will be held in Republic Street on Saturday.
