The development of the IT profession is an important pillar of the European Commission, and should be the same for all EU countries.

A new initiative, proposing an integrated digital organisational reference framework that connects digital organisational capabilities and supporting frameworks on the one hand, with IT competences and professionalism at individual level on the other hand, was recently launched by the European Commission and the consortium partners Capgemini Consulting, Empirica and IDC.

The reference framework, called Digiframe, will contribute to more effective development of digital organisational capabilities and to increase the digital maturity of European enterprises. The initiative will also generate key indicators regarding the supply and demand of IT professionals and eLeaders in Europe, which will permit the tracking of efforts to enhance IT professionalism.

The initiative will permit the tracking of efforts to enhance IT professionalism

To complement this initiative, eSkills Malta Foundation recently held an event at the University of Malta’s Valletta campus, entitled ‘The Impact of IT Professionalism on the European economy’. Its purpose was to celebrate IT professionalism, particularly IT professionals’ role and contribution in building the digital economy and society. It also offered an opportune moment to consolidate the launch of the recently published comprehensive proposal for a European framework for IT professionalism by distributing this material to attendees.

The event was addressed by Maltese digital champion Godfrey Vella, Andre Richier from the European Commission, Niels van der Linden from Capgemini Consulting, Fiona Fanning from CEPIS, Mary Cleary from ICS and myself from the eSkills Malta Foundation,. Other speakers were Pascal Ravesteijn from Hogeschool Utrecht, Gian Marco Campagnolo from Edinburgh University, Ernest Cachia from the University of Malta and Conrad Vassallo from the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology. Parliamentary Secretary for the Digital Economy and Innovation Silvio Schembri delivered the closing speech.

The event was organised in collaboration with the European Commission, the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies, the Irish Computer Society and Capgemini Consulting.

The event was followed by an afternoon workshop organised by the European Commission and the eSkills Malta Foundation. The discussion focused on the progress and ambitions of a service contract on ‘Digital Organisational Frameworks and IT Professionalism’ run for European Commission DG Growth, coordinated by Capgemini Consulting in collaboration with Empirica and IDC.

These events were held back-to-back with the EU Digital Assembly held on June 15 and 16 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Carm Cachia is executive coordinator at eSkills Malta Foundation.
