The sudden increase in waste generated at Ġnejna Bay proved to be too much for the Cleansing Services Directorate to handle.

The directorate’s director, Ramon Deguara, said efforts were being made to clear the beach from all the rubbish.

Residents and people who frequent the popular beach told Times of Malta that a person cleans the beach bins and the actual beach in the morning and puts the rubbish in garbage bags. He lines the beach with the bags and leaves them there for pick up by the Cleansing Services Directorate throughout the day.

Rubbish was being collected late in the afternoon or even in the evening

They said that the rubbish was being collected late in the afternoon or even in the evening, leaving bad odours and eyesores for whoever visits the beach.

They also said that this had been going on for the last two or three weeks now.

Mr Deguara confirmed the information and explained that the matter was in hand.

“Waste collection at Ġnejna Bay is carried out on a daily basis, including weekends and public holidays,” he said.

“The directorate is aware that, in the past two or three weeks, an unpleasant situation has developed also within the context of much more waste being generated on this beach.

“There is full commitment to bring the situation at Ġnejna Bay back to normal in the coming days.”

He added that the Cleansing Directorate and the Mġarr Local Council were in discussions to sort out further cleansing issues.

These include the collection of waste generated by the boathouses in the area. The association of boathouse owners was also involved in the talks.
