The police yesterday launched a series of activities to mark their 203rd anniversary.

Freedom Square, in Valletta was a hive of activity as the police band, the precision drill team, the dogs unit and the mounted section took centre stage in the morning. They will be in Marsascala this evening and at the Sliema promenade tomorrow at 8.30pm.

The police band will be in attendance in Buġibba on Saturday and Mass for the repose of the soul of deceased members of the force will be said on Sunday morning at the Addolorata Cemetery.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna will lead a solemn Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, in Valletta on Wednesday.

The activities continue in Gozo on Thursday, with Mass at the Santa Marija Cemetery chapel and a concert in Marsalforn.

One of the oldest in Europe, the Malta police force dates back to 1814 when Sir Thomas Maitland was Governor of Malta. The Maltese government assumed responsibility for the police in 1921, after self-government had been granted.
