Duncan Micallef has maintained his stranglehold in this year’s FIA European Drag Racing championship after winning the Top Fuel Class in Alastaro, Finland last weekend.

Micallef recovered from a troublesome qualifying session to defeat defending champion and home favourite Anita Makela in the first round.

Another Finnish driver, Antti Horto, was next for Micallef and the Maltese racer again stormed to victory.

In the final, Micallef was up against Stig Neergard, the top performer in the qualifying phase.

However, the Danish driver pulled a red light, handing the win to Micallef.

For Micallef this was his second successive victory in this year’s championship following his triumph in Tierp last month and strengthens his position at the top of the overall standings.

Micallef leads the way on 251 points with Horto a distant second on 199. Neegard is third on 194.

The next round of the championship will be at the HockenheimRing, in Germany between August18-20.
