A worker at Identity Malta has been suspended and is being interrogated by the police after misappropriation of funds from the granting of passports was identified by the agency.

The agency said a discrepancy of between €20,000 and €25,000 had been noticed when officials checked receipts issued by the agency and revenue.

The agency then discovered tampered receipts in possession of an employee. The employee admitted to having pocketed the money and offered to return it, as long as the police were not called in.

Identity Malta immediately called in the police to conduct the necessary investigations. The worker was suspended and is being interrogated.

Parliamentary Secretary Julia Farrugia in a statement said no abuse would be tolerated.
