Malta’s presidency of the European Council ended in style at the Esplora interactive centre last week with a dance performance bringing to an end a series of successful workshops and events.

Blooming Creatures, a performance by Moveo Dance Company, related to the adaptations of creatures to their immediate environment. It combined elements of arts and technology.

The interactive dance-performance portrayed the life cycle of a flower, blooming in a magical garden. It interacts with a mystical creature that changes shape and form throughout the piece.

A relationship is created and develops between the flower and this creature, with the performance culminating in the creature spreading the flowers’ seeds to pollinate and, thus, ensuring that the beauty of the flower will live on forever, completing its life cycle.

The performance was held on the fringes of the final Create Your World project during which youths under the age of 19 were given opportunities to meet artists and experts in art and technology.

During the closing event at Esplora on Friday, several local and foreign projects linking technology and art were highlighted as examples of future collaborations.

The event was co-organised by the 2017 Maltese Presidency of the European Council, the Malta International Arts Festival and Esplora.

Esplora Interactive Science Centre director Rachel Blackburn said the workshops served as an inspiration for the Esplora education programme because the 2017-2018 programme now included a new category of workshops on art in science technology, engineering and maths.

She said Esplora looked forward to improving the working relationship with Arts Council Malta, Spazju Kreattiv and the Manoel Theatre.

Esplora is hosting an exhibition themed ‘Beyond the lab: the DIY science revolution’.

The exhibition consists of seven stories divided into three themes: citizen science, health hacking and DIY biology. It is touring 30 European science centres, museums and schools.
