A total of 9,485 students sat for one or more of the May 2017 session of examimations held over the three-month period starting in early March, organised by the Matriculation and Secondary Education Certificate (Matsec) examinations board. The exam results should be published around July 17.

Exams were held for the first time in five new vocational subjects at SEC level: agribusiness, health and social care, hospitality, IT and engineering technology.

Exam paper layout were standardised across subjects and levels. This involved changes ranging the formatting used to display marks and titles to ensuring that partial marks are shown for sub-questions that do not carry equal weighting.

Also for the first time the SEC aural exams in French and Italian were carried out using recorded audio after similar recordings started to be used for SEC German, Spanish and Arabic aural exams. This ensured uniformity across exam rooms and halls.

Information about processes involved at Matsec, including syllabus panels, paper setting, marking and grade boundaries, is available on the Matsec website and Facebook page.
