It has been reported (June 22) that, after being elected to Parliament, Godfrey Farrugia remarked that his election sends a strong signal to those in favour of the common good. How heartening to hear such words from one who, a few weeks ago, was an integral part of the party in government and is now an Opposition MP.

How many of us, during the last election, put aside our partisan views to promote the importance of the common good?

Did not the Nationalist Party sacrifice its autonomy as a party when it decided to contest under the title of Forza Nazzjonali to safeguard the common good?

Did Nationalist and Labour voters, who elected the Democratic Party’s Marlene Farrugia and Godfrey Farrugia, not sacrifice their own personal agenda to promote the common good?

Were many prominent individuals who openly declared they would be voting in favour of Malta to protest against corruption allegations, the obstruction of the autonomy of institutions and the rule of law, not favouring the common good rather than their own individual gain?

Many of us voted for Forza Nazzjonali because we wanted the common good, the good of society at large, to supersede all other goods, even our own personal gain.

Joseph Muscat, as Prime Minister, should realise that the majority of those in a minority and who voted for Forza Nazzjonali are not anti-Labour but pro-Malta.

When MEPs David Casa and Roberta Metsola spoke out against the corrupt elite in the European Parliament they were not traitors but defenders of the rule of law.

It is by defending the common good that politicians can guarantee good governance and not by defending individual and personal interests. All of us, whatever party we form part of and whatever position we occupy, should be considered as heroes and winners if we sacrifice our own interests for the good of society as a whole.

Let whatever gain we achieve be the result of integrity, good governance and the search for common good.
