Music, art, theatre, dance and film will take centre stage from tonight as the Malta International Arts Festival kicks off.

The festival runs between this evening and July 16 with shows mainly staged in and around Valletta.

Opening the show is Angela's Kitchen, a play about Paul Capsis's connection with his maternal grandmother Angela and her island home of Malta.

One of the highlights is the residency with the London Sinfonietta, with workshops for Maltese composers, which will culminate in a performance with live orchestra and a film screening of Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin.

The free Bandli sound installation will build upon an instinctive mode of entertainment to create an interactive sound installation.

The acclaimed Puerto Flamenco will sail their Ship of Theseus into Fort St Elmo this weekend.

The Mediterranean theme re-emerges with Unifaun Theatre's Metamorfosi, based on Ovid's Greek tragedy, with text by Trevor Żahra and Adrian Buckle.

Tickets may be bought at the door, though several shows are free of charge.
