Pietru Pawl Busuttil, the man who was framed for the shooting of Raymond Caruana in 1986, has passed away.

He died at Sir Anthony Mamo oncology centre aged 73.

Mr Busuttil was arrested by the police on December 11, 1986 after it was claimed that a machine gun used in the fatal shooting was found in his farm.

Mr Busuttil denied any knowledge of the gun and he passed out when he was about to appear before a magistrate.

Then PN leader Eddie Fenech Adami immediately declared this was a frame-up.

The courts soon established that Mr Busuttil has been framed by police. He was exonerated and awarded Lm40,000 (€93,000) in damages.

Mr Busuttil went on to serve as Mayor of Safi for 18 years.
