Six juniors will be representing Malta at the European Junior Championships which will be held in Romania between September 4 and 15.

Around 1,400 participants from across 60 countries will be competing in the largest chess tournament for juniors on the continent.

The championships consists of six age-groups, ranging from Under 8 up to the U-18 category.

The Malta Chess Federation selected is team on the basis of the players’ performance during the Junior Championships which were held in November.

The Maltese team is formed by Mattew Fleri Soler, Luke Fleri Soler and Milena Stagno who are all ten years old, Matteo Stagno, 12, Jack Mizzi, 11, and Steve Mizzi, 16.

The six players will be accompanied by coach Oasna Caruana Pulpan, a woman FIDE Master, who will be the head of the delegation in Romania.

The tournament will be played over nine rounds, one held every day, on the Swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per moves starting from move one.
