I contacted Virtu Ferries to enquire about travelling with my dog. Small breeds are allowed to stay with the passengers but since my dog is over nine kilos, I was informed I should leave it locked in the car, in the garage, though I could check on it twice throughout the duration of the trip.

This is outright unacceptable as I cannot leave the dog in that heat, apart from with the vessel’s engine noise.

The authorities are in duty bound to stop this discrimination. It is common knowledge that small breeds could be vicious and they snap at anything that moves, as in the case of some chihuahua, which barely weigh three kilos.

This is one of the problems connected with the monopoly that Virtu Ferries enjoy and seems to be endorsed by the authorities. The situation is unacceptable.

In this scenario, other people in my position would not beable to enjoy holidays abroad because there is no other option open to them.

Are the owners of large breed dogs who do not travel by car not allowed on the ferry?

No matter what kind of excuse management may come up with, I would never imagine them leaving their son/daughter locked up in the garage during the trip.
