A few days ago, the Mosta local council sent an e-mail to all residents indicating the days in which streets in the locality are cleaned. They were also asked to report whether the scavenger fails to appear. The council could not do better. It is now up to us residents to keep the locality clean.

Rubbish collection, which includes recycling stuff and bulky refuse, is efficiently done, of course, costing the council thousands of euros yearly. Unfortunately, there are those who just do not care and, though keeping their house spick and span, throw outdoors anything they do not want.

If used properly, recycling bins continue to offer a good service but there are instances where they are an eyesore. This happens when residents wanting to dispose of bulky refuse leave such unwanted items near the bins rather than call the council to have them collected. Sometimes, even rubbish bags with food leftovers are left near the bins, causing a nasty smell, especially in hot days, and attracting rats.

What really irritates me is the lack of cooperation by the owners of certain clubs and restaurants who dump glass bottles together with the normal waste rather than wait for the special collection day, which is the first Friday of the month.

Also annoying is the junk mail left in letter boxes, on doorsteps and on windowsills of vacant houses. On windy days, junk mail left on doorsteps is scattered everywhere.

This is not fair on residents who do their part to keep the locality clean, on the local council that pays a lot of money to contractors for rubbish collection and on the locality itself.
