The statue of St Paul was taken out of its niche in St Paul’s Shipwreck Church of Valletta this morning in preparation for a special procession to mark the 1,950-year anniversary of the martyrdom of St Paul.

The procession will take place this Thursday, but parishioners told the Times of Malta that rather than the normal route around Republic and St Paul’s Streets, “St Paul will go to meet the Pawlini”.

They said that for only the second time ever, the statue would be taken down to the vicinity of Siege Bell Memorial – an area known to be populated by a large number of the staunchest Pawlini.

Parishioners explained that the only other time the statue had taken this route, was some seven years ago, when the church celebrated the 1,950th anniversary of the shipwreck of St Paul.

“It went down so well, and the people appreciated it so much that we decided to do it again for this anniversary too. I really doubt that this will ever happen again,” one parishioner said.
