‘Vigilance and the role of fortifications in Malta during the outbreak of plague in Messina in 1743’ is the title of an article by Dr Stephen Spiteri featured in the latest edition of the annual Journal of Baroque Studies published by the University of Malta’s International Institute for Baroque Studies.

The peer-reviewed academic journal, edited by Prof. Frans Ciappara, contains 11 original articles by academics from various universities and research institutes.

Prof. Denis De Lucca, director of the institute, contributes two articles – one discussing Mattia Preti as an architect and a second on the Byzantine church of Our Saviour in the Baroque Bonajuto Palace, Catania.

Prof. Francesco Frasca, from Sapienza University, Rome, discusses wars at sea between 1550 and 1720, while Giuseppe Marcocci from the University of Viterbo analyses the conflicting histories of the Portuguese inquisition.

Prof. Charles Savona-Ventura studies the Baroque influence on the uniforms used by the Chivalric Orders as exemplified by the Order of St Lazarus in France.

PhD candidate Matthias Ebeyer presents his findings on Hospitallers and their Counter-Reformation Saints.

Regina Deckers presents a study on the representation of corpses in Baroque sculpture

A.D.Harvey presents a paper entitled ‘The seated female nude: from Raphael to Ingres’.

Marie Claire Finger presents an analysis of ‘The Knight artist Lucas Garnier and his role in mid-17th century painting in Malta’.

Danielle Mallia presents a paper on ‘The Magistral Possesso of Mdina through Favray’s Lens’
