An Instagram model and fitness blogger has been killed in a freak kitchen accident involving an exploding whipped cream canister.

Rebecca Burger, 33, had more than 150,000 followers on Instagram, where she posted various food, fashion and fitness related photos.

But the most recent post to her account was a far more sombre affair.

In the post, her family wrote that Ms Burger had been killed after a pressurised whipped cream dispenser exploded, hitting her in the thorax and sending her into cardiac arrest.

"The dispenser that led to her death was sealed. Don't use this type of utensil in your home! Tens of thousands of these defective units are still in circulation," they wrote in the post.

A spokesperson for the company that manufactures the canisters, Ard'Time, told L'Express magazine that it had issued a recall of dangerous canisters in 2013 and urged consumers not to use them.

"Sd did all we could to alert everyone," the spokesperson said. "We can only regret this accident, though at this stage a link between the accident and our brand has not been established."
