Drug users who successfully rehabilitate themselves should be spared the possibility of facing jail for pending offences, the President has appealed.

The authorities need to give attention to those who underwent a drug rehabilitation programme but still had a looming jail term, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said.

The President was speaking during a ceremony awarding those who successfully underwent a rehabilitation programme at San Blas.

Highlighting the financial problems many faced once they completed the rehabilitation programme, the President said such individuals should be provided with social accommodation to help them integrate back into society.

She heaped praise on the work carried out by Caritas which was giving so much back to society.

She told those graduating from the programme: "You have every opportunity to serve as an example to others. I'm proud of you."
