I refer to the recent call for applications for a new accredited course for real estate agents and consultants, organised by the Institute of Tourism Studies.

As a company with 35 years of experience, Dhalia has always believed in the importance of education. We strongly feel that an educated real estate professional is in the best position to serve clients and have a positive impact of the Maltese property market as a whole. An uneducated property agent will ultimately hinder clients and damage the market.

We appreciate the eagerness to educate and qualify estate agents, however, it would be a mistake to jump the gun and rush into a system without the required framework in place. It is too early to offer and promote these courses because the suggested legislation has not yet passed through Parliament. After presenting the white paper on the Maltese real estate market for public consultation in early 2016, the government is expected to enact the respective legislation within the coming weeks.

An all-important issue which has, as yet, been neglected is the discussion of the curriculum with the Federation of Estate Agents. As of now, we do not know any details on the qualification requirements, the duration of the course, at which level will it be offered and leading to what qualification. Until these specifics are set in stone, any current course lacks legitimacy.

The educational requirements for real estate agents must be implemented strategically, starting from a thorough consultation with the federation, to ensure that guidelines are appropriate.

Overall, we believe that training is paramount to ensure that the highest standards are met in providing customer service in the real estate industry.
