I refer to the photo on the back page of the Times of Malta (June 20) showing the mess left by irresponsible litterbugs around the bring-in site at Riviera Beach, Mellieħa, which is owned by the local council and managed by Green MT.

We feel in duty bound to comment due to the fact that Green MT spends thousands of euros to keep these bring-in sites in order and clean every other day but, yet again, due to some citizens’ utter disregard for the law and norms of decent behaviour, the areas around the site were a disgusting, unsightly mess.

In fact, the photo shows that the site was not full and much of the waste disposed around the bins was in grey bags full of recyclable material. We are informed that there was a beach clean-up on the day and the volunteers just placed the collected material around the bring-in site instead of making the extra effort and disposing of it in the containers.

However, there were a number of black bags and other bulky refuse items that were irresponsibly thrown there by others.

We again urge the public to continue to use the bring-in sites in a proper way and at no time should anyone leave waste of any nature next to the containers.

The photo above shows the site after it was cleaned.
