Transport Malta will discuss a “transitory solution” for the Mrieħel bypass junction, which was the site of a fatal motorcycle accident earlier this month, a spokesman for the authority told this paper.

Christopher Paul Abela, 28, died when his motorcycle slammed into a truck turning into the Mrieħel industrial estate.

The junction allows motorists travelling in the direction of Attard to cut across two lanes of oncoming traffic in order to reach the industrial estate.

National speed limit rules apply, meaning that motorists can be travelling at up to 80km/h when they reach the junction.

The Transport Malta spokesman said that for several northbound drivers, the junction on the Mrieħel bypass was the most feasible way to access the industrial estate.

Mr Abela’s family members have appealed to the authorities to look at accident-prone areas and blind spots, and take action.

The Transport Malta spokesman said the authority would be discussing a transitory solution with the Mrieħel Foundation until the bypass was upgraded.

The Foundation is made up of a group of entrepreneurs operating from the Mrieħel industrial estate, who last year joined forces with the government to embellish the area.

The spokesman said the bypass upgrade was part of the analysis undertaken in the 2025 national transport master plan.

The spokesman said this upgrading would be one of Transport Malta’s future projects.

The bypass has been the spot of several past tragedies.

In 2005, two young girls were killed while crossing the bypass.

Their deaths led to cries for a pedestrian footbridge to be installed over the bypass, in order to allow residents in the surrounding areas to cross safely.

Three years ago the Planning Authority approved the permit for the new plans that also included lifts and stairwells on either side of the road.

The bridge is now in place.
