Several months ago, readers were delighted to see the following heading ‘Wardens to take lenient approach’ on this newspaper.
Drivers were informed that, forthwith, wardens would no longer issue fines for some traffic offences, most notably parking, as motorists will be given a second chance in the form of a written warning.
Who are they trying to fool? I have had quite a few traffic offences (all for parking) since the article appeared and I was not given a single warning.
The former parliamentary secretary for local government, Stefan Buontempo, had even highlighted the six traffic contraventions where warnings would apply. He had also said the changes were part of the local wardens’ reform.
Another amusing announcement was that the “government does not consider wardens to be a money-making machine and our aim is to give motorists a second chance in cases of minor offences”.
Readers were further informed that, under the new system, a fine will only be issued in case of a second offence for the exact same contravention.
Wardens continue to do what they know best and that is prey upon motorists who, in this day and age, cannot find anywhere to park. Local councils do nothing to improve the situation and neither does the government, which cashes in all the road licences and, in all this time, the wardens run rampant chalking up contraventions. Actually, they are really a money-making machine.
By the way, if anyone received a warning of any kind from a warden, I would like to know, please.
