Palermo: Palermo, who employed five coaches on their way to relegation from Serie A last season, named Bruno Tedino yesterday to lead them in their attempt to bounce back to the top flight. Tedino, 52, was previously in charge of third tier Pordenone for two seasons and has also coached Italy’s under-16 and under-17 teams. The Sicilian club added in a statement that Fabio Lupo would be their sporting director.

Adler: Mainz have signed former Germany international goalkeeper Rene Adler on a two-year contract. The 32-year-old was a free agent after opting to end his five-year stay with fellow Bundesliga club Hamburg. “The change to Mainz is for me the right step at the right time, the quiet and concentrated atmosphere in the club fits me,” Adler told Mainz’s official website.

Downing: Former England midfielder Stewart Downing has been told he can leave Middlesbrough on a free transfer this summer. New boss Garry Monk has already started to reshape his squad after less than a fortnight in the job, and Press Association Sport understands he does not see a long-term role for Downing, who has two years remaining on his contract.

Sels: Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels has completed a season-long loan move to Belgian champions Anderlecht. The 25-year-old, who joined the Magpies in a £5million switch from Gent last summer, could play Champions League football once again next season having done so with his former club before his arrival at St James’ Park.
