The SPCA has urged fireworks enthusiasts to reduce the noise created by fireworks, in the interests of animals as well as children who often get scared.

The society said it is urging fireworks factories and organising committees to start favouring silent fireworks whenever possible.

Breeders and pet owners were also encouraged to expose young pets to random loud noises to help them get used to the human environment.

However, animals that have already developed noise phobias have very little chance of getting used to fireworks, the society said.

The SPCA said it would like to see the authorities giving greater value to animal welfare when issuing permits for fireworks in village feasts and public events.
