A film showing in competition at the Valletta Film Festival today is Daphne (2017). Directed by Peter Mackie Burns, the British drama is an intimate character study of a 31-year-old singleton who goes off the rails after witnessing a random act of violence.

Half-Sicilian Daphne Vitale (Emily Beecham) is a restaurant employee in bustling London and a happy-go-lucky hedonist who is largely content to freewheel through a life of casual sex and recreational drugs.

When she saves the life of a shopkeeper, stabbed in a failed robbery, the impenetrable armour Daphne wears to protect herself begins to crack and she is forced to fight against the inevitability of a much-needed change in her life.

The film is being screened at Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 9pm.

Another interesting film showing in the Masters of Cinema category tonight is the 1995 French film City of Lost Children by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

The plot sees a monstrous scientist named Krank residing in a surrealist society and kidnapping children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his ageing process. The film is screening in St George’s Square at 9pm.
