I ended my Talking Point of June 5 by asking: “Will he [Simon Busuttil] now take full responsibility and resign? I do not believe so.”

What we are seeing, one Nationalist MP or official after another, all exhorting Busuttil to reconsider his decision to resign and, thus, stay on as PN and Opposition leader, indicate that this is being orchestrated in order for him to have a valid reason for going back on his decision to step down.

What these Nationalist MPs, officials and also PN opinionists are saying to justify their claim that Busuttil should soldier on is quite astounding, even if untold.

They are saying there is no one else as capable as Busuttil to continue to lead the party. If Busuttil is the best the PN can offer to Maltese and Gozitan voters, when he has already lost three elections in a row since becoming PN leader, the latest being worse than that suffered by the Nationalist Party under Lawrence Gonzi, what hope can PN supporters have of winning in 2022, whether with Busuttil as leader or without him?
