Duncan Micallef stormed to victory in round two of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship which was held at the Tierp Arena, Sweden last weekend.

For the Maltese racer this was his first victory in the Top Fuel Methanol class this season and lifts him to the top of the overall standings on 158 points, 17 clear of Finland’s Anti Horto.

Driving his Rune Fjeld Motorsport dragster, Micallef outpaced Stefan Gunnarsson, of Sweden in the opening round to book his place into the semi-finals.

Here he was up against home favourite Micke Kagered and Micallef produced a storming run to cross the finish line ahead of the Swedish driver in an impressive time of 3.93 seconds.

In the other semi-final, Horto, also on a Rune Fjeld Motorsport dragster, beat Stig Neergard with a time of 3.96 seconds.

However, the win came at a cost for Horto as he suffered significant engine problems in the semi-finals and could not fix his drag racer in time for the final, thus awarding victory to Micallef.

World champion Anita Makela suffered a surprising first-round exit when she was beaten by Neergard.

The next round of the championship will be held in Alastaro, Finland between June 30 and July 2.

Standings: D. Micallef 158; A. Horto 141; S. Neergard 110; L. Jones 106; M. Kagered 87; A. Makela 86; U. Erbacher 36; S. Gunnarsson 36; T. Lehtimaki 35.
