Casual elections among Labour candidates were held today, filling seats vacated by Labour MPs elected on two districts.  

Seven seats were up for grabs, and they were taken by two former ministers, a former MP and four newcomers.   

The winners were former Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, former Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis and former MP Etienne Grech and newcomers Glenn Bedingfield, Rosianne Cutajar, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Clayton Bartolo.

The seats were vacated by Joseph Muscat, Chris Fearne, Helena Dalli, Edward Scicluna, Silvio Schembri, Michael Falzon and Evarist Bartolo.

The big losers today were former parliamentary secretaries Deborah Schembri and Stefan Buontempo, who failed to get re-elected.

Glenn Bedingfield makes it to the House

A former MEP and advisor to the Prime Minister in the last legislature, Glenn Bedingfield becomes an MP for the first time. The prime minister's aide who runs a controversial blog which targets government critics, had contested the second and fifth districts.

A former Tourism Minister, Dr Zammit Lewis contested the eighth and ninth districts but failed to be elected, missing on the opportunity to become minister.

At 28, Ms Cutajar is the youngest MP and the second youngest woman in Parliament after the late President Agatha Barbara.

In line with tradition as the youngest MP on the government benches, she will present a motion to thank the President for her address at the opening of parliament.  

Ms Cutajar will have to resign as mayor of Qormi to take up her seat in parliament.

Former Competitiveness and Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, a renowned criminal lawyer, had also failed to be elected but will now take up the seat given up by Dr Falzon.

Newcomer Clayton Bartolo will take up his seat as a new member of parliament, having won the election with a 14-vote margin over former Parliamentary Secretary Deborah Schembri.

Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi elected

In the fifth district, the seat vacated by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was won by former Labour Party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

To date Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi was the chairman of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation.

Etienne Grech re-elected after recounts drama

Etienne Grech was re-elected after several recounts on the fourth district, taking a seat vacated by Chris Fearne. 

Dr Grech was always in the lead, but two other candidates - Andy Ellul and former Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo were tied as other candidates were eliminated and votes were transferred.

Three recounts were held when Notary Joe Cilia was eliminated and it was eventually confirmed that Dr Buontempo had a single vote more than Dr Ellul.

Dr Ellul was thus eliminated, with the final count was being between Etienne Grech and Dr Buontempo, with the former winning.
