The Civil Protection Department has started experimental use of compressed air foam as an alternative to water for firefighting.

A compressed air foam system consists of a standard centrifugal water pumping system that has an entry point where compressed air can be added to a foam solution to generate foam. Compressed air foam propels itself farther than water and adheres to walls and ceilings, creating a shield from radiant heat energy.

The department said the system may be introduced for everyday operations.
