With the first two slip roads of the Kappara junction project now practically completed, the focus had shifted to the roundabout, which will be lowered while a bridge is built overhead.

Most of the pillars have already been built, and girders will be laid shortly.

The above video, released by Transport Malta, shows the making of the girders by a Spanish firm.

They have to withstand considerable weight and the ravages of time and weather.

Eight girders for each direction will span the piers of the flyover. The largest girder is almost 30 metres long.

The firm has constructed the girders and will be shipping them from La Coruña in Spain in the coming days. The girders will be landed at the site of the former Malta Ship Building and huge trailers will take them to the site in Kappara.

Transport Malta said that tonight, a trailer that will carry some of the steel girders will test the route from Marsa to Kappara.

One of the trailers that will carry the beams will set out from Marsa at 10pm. It will drive through Triq il-Labour, Triq Aldo Moro, the Marsa-Ħamrun Bypass, Regional Road and Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli.

The trailer will be driving on the right hand side carriageway since it is easier to manoeuvre the heavy payload. The road will be closed in segments to allow drivers to drive through alternative routes for the segment and go unimpeded for the rest of the route.

Police and Transport Malta officers will be closing the segments and guiding drivers to bypass the closed segments through alternative routes. Whilst apologising for the inconvenience, we ask drivers to collaborate with officials on the road and follow their instructions.

The trailer is expected to take around three hours to make the trip.

Once the girders arrive, trailers will go through this route to carry the beams, one or two at a time each night. Workers from the Spanish firm that constructed the beams will weld them in place immediately.
