A new PN government will implement the largest ever infrastructural upgrade Malta has ever seen, PN leader Simon Busuttil pledged this evening.

Speaking in Qrendi, Dr Busuttil said that a new PN government would draw up and implement a long-term plan investing hundreds of millions in the country’s infrastructure, including roads and new modes of transport.

“The national plan will span out the country’s vision over more than one legislature so that everyone will know where the island needs to go and what projects will be carried over a long-term period, one after the other.”

He said that this plan would include a new intermodal transport system – incorporating an underground and overground metro system – making Maltese transport as efficient as possible.

“The system will be integrated with other modes of transport to span across all the island,” Dr Busuttil.

The PN leader said that in the coming days the PN will launch its vision on the metro system, with detailed plans on how this is to be implemented by the next PN government.

Dr Busuttil said that the infrastructural upgrade will also include the tunnel between Malta and Gozo if the current ongoing geological studies will conclude that this project is feasible.

The PN leader said that the current government has "spent the last four years squandering money on government jobs and making the few rich” and has let the country’s infrastructure fall into third world levels.

In a reply, the Labour Party said Dr Busuttil's speech was negative and full of falsity and showed that the only guarantee he could give was to put the clock backwards to the disaster and failure that was public transport in the past, something the people voted against four years ago.

This was a system the government was implementing with a clear plan.

It would have been wise and timely had the leader of the Opposition today done what the people were expecting - to act on what he spoke upon, but a month after the wages scandal, the PN had not yet published the false invoices.
