Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club rider Steve Sciberras recently travelled to Sicily for the first race from the Grand Tour Sicilia Time Trial Championships.
Competing in the Medio Fondo category, which consisted of a 14.5km time trial, Sciberras was pitted in a field of 113 cyclists with most of them hailing from the region.
Sciberras completed two loops of the circuit in 20 minutes and 51.153 seconds, just behind the first two riders for an overall third placing in the general classification. His timing also meant a creditable second place in his age group.
“The race was very well attended – not only from a competitor perspective but also spectator wise,” Sciberras said.
“The route was closed for traffic throughout the time trial so it was easier for the public to follow proceedings. I was the only Maltese rider in the race but I dug deep and my training and preparation came into good use in the end for a very encouraging result.”
Sciberras’s participation in the Grand Tour Sicilia Championships was made possible through the support of Birkirkara SJ, Garmin, Sport Malta and Carrera Bikes.
